The Barrington High School Class of 1990 Reunion took place on July 22nd, 2000 and it was a smashing success! First, let me give you the pure facts and figures. 170 alumni attentended the reunion, out of a graduating class of 512. That's exactly one third of our class. For a class of our size, that is considered an excellent turnout. I have been assured by professional reunion planners that anything over 30 percent is really outstanding! With at least a hundred guests who came along, that made for quite a huge bash.
A jazz band made up of recent BHS graduates played during dinner, and they were really great! The deejay was spinning some 80s alternative dance stuff that didn't exactly pack the dance floor--but I'm fairly sure people were just too busy talking to dance much.
People partied and talked until they kicked the last of the stragglers out of the Hyatt Mayoral Ballroom at 1:30am. But fear not--a good number of us continued to party at The Living Room bar next door until 2:30am, and then at other points of interest in the greater Schaumburg area until right around sun-up.
I think the Hard Partier of the Night award goes to John Mola, who got carried out of the living room by the bouncers at 2:00am. Mola--you are an animal!
If I can sum up the evening in one word for myself, it was overwhelming. There were just so many people that I could have spent all night catching up with, and I had to do it all in one night! There were even quite a few people I didn't have a chance to speak to.
Which brings me to my next point: The Reunion Book. Lisa Giambarberee has built an outstanding Book for all of us. Click here to read about it and learn how to get one for yourself.
The reunion book will only stay current for so long. However, this web site will continue to operate for the next ten years! So please continue to update your information in the Where Are They Now? section.
The reunion was a huge event to coordinate and we couldn't expect to get things perfect the first time out. I hope that you're all generally happy with it, but we can always improve. So Jim has created a suggestion box on the site that will incorporate your suggestions for next time. If you really feel strongly about improving the next reunion, my best suggestion is to get involved and join the planning committee.
I want to take this moment to thank everyone who made the reunion a success. Jim Connelly and Joy Appenzeller Fortney designed this fantastic webiste, Mindy Masterson, Sara Jensen Kennicott, Beth Ann Palazzo and Paul Schneider did decorations, Jeannie Lugtu did the name badges, Lisa Gia contacted teachers and is doing the Reunion Book, Ron Velleuer and Brian Beckenbaugh handles the music, Jorie Sandburg, Madame Sandburg, and Debbie Landey worked the greeting table, Beth Pedersen was our contact at the Hyatt, Jenny Robert Abram was our treasurer, Christine O'Malley helped stuff mailers, Rich Janney did cartoons for the website, Spencer Thomas ('93) was our photographer, and Adam Greetis was the instigator. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
For those who couldn't attend the reunion, I can confidently attest that we've all grown up a lot since high school and we've somehow evolved into an interesting, generally nice bunch of people. It was a really fun evening where everyone was just so excited to see each other. If you were unable to attend, you were missed, and I really hope to catch up with you at the next one.
Take care,
Jason Mayland
